One is the Loneliest Number - BSO

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one
No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
`Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, worse than two
It's just no good anymore since she went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday
One is the loneliest, number one is the loneliest
Number one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest, one is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
It's just no good anymore since she went away
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
(Number) One is the loneliest(Number)
One is the loneliest(Number)
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

Play-A-Day (Day 18)

Lights up on a railroad station. There are crowds of people sitting around on the benches scattered throughout the stage. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of the train. That can be seen by nervous walking and pacing along with the slightest noise causing some of the characters to jump and be startled. The people sitting or pacing can be talking with each other from time to time of their anticipation of the arrival of loved ones, friends, business members. The major characters sitting/pacing are Jeffery a middle aged man greatly anticipating the return of his wife of 25 years from a business trip that took her to China for a month. Rush is a heroin hooked 20-something year old painfully awaiting the return of his dealer so he can get his latest fix to last him. He is very antsy and nervous about everyone around him. He has obviously not had any drugs in a while. Mary is a young girl sitting with her father Jason and they are both awaiting the return of Andre. Andre and Jason are married together and are both homosexual and have received a great number of forms of harassment throughout the years for their open relationship and love for each other. They have raised Mary to be a sweet and affectionate girl who is accepting of all peoples. Mary however ever since she began school has seen male and female relationships and has become slightly disgusted at her two fathers and saddened at her lack of a mother. Mike is a 20 something year old college student awaiting the return of his girlfriend of four years. His girlfriend has been in NYC for the past 6 months trying to get a degree in acting. Mike from time to time reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small square box and opens it up and upon seeing it’s still there quickly closes the box and returns it to his pocket. Each of these charactors will stand up and introduce themselves to the audience and briefly explain who they are and who they are waiting for. After all have introduced themselves all characters stand together and say “One of us will be left alone”. The characters then go back to their verbal or non verbal activities. After a few minutes a voice over the intercom announces the 8 o’clock from NYC has arrived and passengers have begun to depart. All of the characters begin to show their overwhelming anticipation at being reunited with the person they are looking forward to seeing. One by one members of the train walk on stage and go to their proper party. First Jeffrey’s wife comes onstage. She has not gone one night since leaving without sex. She is to appear alien to Jeffrey who is regardless overwhelmed at her return. They exit offstage. Next up is Rush’s drug dealer who is carrying a large plastic bag. Rush quickly goes to him and snatches the bag which the dealer quickly snatches back and shoves Rush to the ground. He then exits offstage but not before looking around shadily. Rush hurries after him. Andre is the next to return. Only upon his entering a young blonde woman is holding his hand. Mary rushes over to him and hugs him. Jason simply stands and has a puzzled and lost look upon his face. Mary begins to cling to Andre and the woman. Jason is shocked and hurt and lost. He walks offstage. Andre quickly follows after him. The young woman and Mary take hands and walk after them in no rush. Mary appears overwhelmingly happy with an older female. Mike’s girlfriend then enters the stage. Mike runs over to her and they embrace. Mike them quickly drops to a kneel and proposes to her. She looks about unsure. She eventually closes the box and slowly backs up offstage. Mike is left where he was with the closed ring box in his hand. He is frozen and the ring box falls from his hand and he makes no motion to save it. The ring falls out and bounces across the floor. Lights fade
